國際特赦組織(Amnesty International，AI)9日發表報告指出，厄利垂亞監禁了至少1萬名政治犯，其中有許多人置身於難以想像的惡劣條件下。

國際特赦組織是在厄利垂亞即將於24日慶祝獨立20週年之前，發表這份報告。報告中說，厄利垂亞禁止政治異議，獨立媒體遭到鎮壓，宗教少數團體被鎖定為目標，政府使用地下牢房和載貨的貨櫃來囚禁這些人犯。

國際特赦組織的厄利垂亞研究員貝斯頓(Claire Beston)說，厄利垂亞政府有系統地以未經起訴的非法逮捕與拘留，來鎮壓所有反對派、讓異議人士消音，並嚴懲任何拒絕遵從這些政府對人民生活設限的人。

報告中說，在厄利垂亞至少有1萬名犯人，消失在祕密且無法與外界交流的監禁中；國際特赦組織並警告，他們無法獲知確切遭到監禁的人數。
